St. Elijah the Tishbite is a prophet of God in the Old Testament. “Most zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts (1 Kings 19:14),” he challenged and won against the false prophets of Baal in a contest under the reign of the evil king Ahab and his wife, Jezebel. Despite the victory, Elijah feared and fled for his life as Queen Jezebel wanted him dead for what he’s done. Afraid and frustrated, he desperately prayed for his death: “Enough, Lord! Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors (1 Kings 19:4).” But God was not done with Him yet.
God sent an angel who ministered to Elijah. He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb (1 Kings 19:8) and there he met God in “a light silent sound” (1 Kings 19:12). From then on, the passionate prophet marched forward with his mission. His zeal for the Lord could not be overcome by the powerful rulers who wanted to kill him and silence his voice.
Unfaithful and evil leaders still rule among us. False prophets hide themselves as fake news trolls. Shamelessly, some of them distort the truth in public. Now more than ever, our voices matter. It is our right to call out anyone or any institution for their wrongdoings. When we are silent, their evil deeds would go unnoticed and remain hidden. Nothing is going to get better in our country unless we truly care. We are prophets by virtue of our Baptism. We proclaim what is true and right. We share the Good News wherever we are. Like Elijah, may we have the ‘zeal’ to speak the truth always and in all ways.
Together, we stand. #Tumindig
